Welcome Hamlet & Wilbur!
This blog post won’t be very long as we have a Facebook Page specifically for our two wonderfully awesome Kune Kune pig additions to the homestead. Yes, we have pigs! Lisa’s dream come true….. she has her live pigs and when we breed them, Colin will have his Baby Back, Baby Back, Baby Back Ribs! We will be keeping Hamlet and Wilbur for as long as they live. They will the farm studs and part of our family, however the offspring they create with females we introduce will be sold or harvested for our own purpose.
Several reasons for this big step so soon but a couple are in the forefront of all the others. One, our insurance costs for the property will be in farm status. Our property tax with the county will follow suit. We will also be registering as an actual farm, so yes, we are pig farmers! (How fitting considering Lisa has been collecting ornamental pigs for years!)
Ashley was a pivotal person in this whole process. Research, education, and for the most part got the pen and housing ready for our new family members. Lisa and Colin jumped in where we could and all 3 of us cleaned out that barn which was disgusting. We did not have a before pic to show, but are kind of happy we forgot to take one as it was truly disgusting. We fully sanitized and secured the barn filling holes and more. Of course we have a ton more to do in there, but the pigs are VERY happy in their new setting. The current accommodations have an indoor for night and unfavourable weather with a doorway to the outdoor pen which has grass they love to eat. The outside pen has a mud pit tree shade and more.
We are posting images and information about Hamlet and Wilbur on their Facebook Page only as it will easier for us. They are such cool little guys, who are already growing, and they have awesome personalities!
