Our Great Pyrenees & Maremma Guardians 2025 – Updated!

We still have Sam the twitchy cat, and naturally still a Packers fan of course. Damn he looks cool in that toque! Sam is supposed to keep the house in check meaning free of bugs. Sam is clearly not pulling his weight sometimes. Apparently, his sole purpose in life is treat acquisition, scratches, and gravy filled lunches!

There are 5 dogs that keep watch on the property and yes, they are named after Star Wars characters (thanks to Colin). They are all Great Pyrenees & Maremma breed dogs. Some pure bred, some a mix.

Luke is the elder and has his own grumpy style of keeping watch. If there is anything new, he lets everyone know he doesn’t like it and he can see things that you can’t. He simply knows and is obviously using the force.

Solo is the largest of the dogs and his bark can definitely make you stop and consider your next 10 moves carefully. Loveable and protective, he definitely uses his size to bully through the others to get a prime spot for scratches! Solo is also the Dad to Chewie and Rey!

Leia is Mom to Chewie and Rey. She still works at keeping Chewie and Rey in line but it can be a challenge at times. Leia is a very soft and gentle soul especially when scratches are in order. She was an exceptional Mom when the puppies were born in early 2024. Leia is also an amazing hunter and can catch prairie dogs, mice, and most likely birds also with ease.

Rey ironically has many of the characteristics of the actual Star Wars character. She is a scavenger and definitely a survivor and many times finds herself drawn into conflict with Chewie and Leia, LOL. Rey LOVES her face scratched and is very gentle like her Mom. Rey is definitely an independent soul in conflict and always craves that human contact. She just loves attention for sure.

Chewie is very playful and definitely most active. One could say he also has the true characteristics of the Star Wars character. He has a MASSIVE heart, so loveable and most definitely has unwavering loyalty. At the time of this content being written, Chewie still barks at anything and everything. You can quite often look outside and see Chewie barking and the others are all sleeping. Hilarious!
